Rainbow Road is a dream long in the making. A partnership between the Chamber, Nimbin Community Centre Inc., Lismore City Council and various government agencies, the project will see construction of a high standard and regionally significant walking trail. Stage one is approximately 700m of trail that will conserve, establish and interpret the natural, recreational and cultural values of the area. Providing a beautiful attraction away from the main street of Nimbin, Rainbow Road will develop accessible linkages and safe pedestrian access between village attractions including accommodation, businesses, residential precincts, Nimbin Headers sports fields, Nimbin Showground and Nimbin Pre-school.
Rainbow Road will also preserve, restore and revegetate small creek and wetland areas while adding value to the local economy. If 50,000 people per annum use the walk (25% of current visitors) it could feasibly lead to an additional 20,000 bed nights per annum, 35 direct new jobs, $10m extra in visitor expenditure per annum and development opportunities for sustainable eco-style accommodation in Nimbin and surrounding areas. The feasibility of the trail has been confirmed and the project now awaits funding to complete stage one, hopefully during 2018.
