Murals That Tell Our Story

One of the most significant is the Birrugan mural near Armonica Café. This artwork is a faithful
reproduction of the original mural created by the late Burri Jerome, a proud Dunghutti man,
talented musician, artist and storyteller who passed away in 2017. Burri’s original hand-painted
mural stood in this spot for 22 years, becoming a quiet but powerful presence in the village
before weather finally took its toll and it could no longer be repaired.

When Burri’s daughter later discovered a photograph from the mural’s early days, the
opportunity arose to honour her father’s legacy. The image was shared with Armsign, a Lismore-
based sign manufacturing and design company, who worked carefully to reproduce the artwork
on aluminium. While it can never replace the original hand-painted piece, the new mural stands
as a lasting memorial to Burri and his remarkable contribution to Nimbin.
Burri was deeply committed to keeping his culture alive, sharing his love of Country through art,
music and the rich cultural heritage of Dreamtime stories. To honour both the Dreamtime story
of Birrugan and Burri’s own life, a storytelling plaque has recently been installed beside the
mural. We encourage everyone to take a moment to read it and reflect on the legacy it represents.
Another much-loved mural has also recently reappeared above the newsagency. Created by artist
Miranda Williamson, the original work was removed some years ago for restoration.

Sadly, time and weather had taken their toll, and Miranda felt it could not be repaired. Instead, she supported the idea of having it reproduced on tin, allowing the artwork to live on in a new form. Once
again, Armsign worked from photographs of the original mural to create the piece now
brightening our main street. Our thanks go to everyone who contributed to this project, including
the generous building owners who provided financial support. It is a beautiful and welcome
addition to the streetscape.
Beyond these major works, the Chamber has also contributed financially to the mural on the new
toilet block in Peace Park and the bird sign in Aquarius Park. These projects, large and small, all
help shape the distinctive character of our village.

Finally, a heartfelt thank you to the community. Donations placed in the mural tins located in
businesses around the village play a vital role in making these projects possible.
