FLUSHED WITH SUCCESS: NIMBIN’S NEW TOILET BLOCK OPENS WITH STYLE

There’s something special about a ribbon-cutting moment that celebrates… a toilet block. But this one? This one deserves every bit of the fanfare.

After years of passionate community campaigning, our beautiful new amenities block - complete with toilets, showers and a whole lot of pride has officially opened adjacent to the Nimbin Pool, Peace Park and the start of the Rainbow Walk. And it’s not just a bathroom - it’s a beacon of what community collaboration can achieve.

A royal flush of community spirit

The grand opening was attended by champions who helped turn the dream into reality.

  • Janelle Saffin MP, who secured the funding and opened the block with genuine community spirit.

  • Sue Edmonds, long-time Nimbin Advisory Group (NAG) member and tireless advocate for the project, who spoke with heart about the importance of grassroots voices being heard.

  • Mayor Steve Krieg, who joined in recognising the years of persistence that led to this very practical—but very symbolic—milestone.

And in true Nimbin style, Sue presented Janelle with a handcrafted trophy by local artist Pauline Ahern: a mini toilet complete with a green tree frog popping out of it. A cheeky and joyful nod to the local fauna—and the long wait!

More than just a toilet stop

Let’s be real—it’s not every day we get excited about public amenities, but this one hits different. Strategically placed right at the entrance to:

  • The Nimbin Pool – perfect for post-swim rinse offs

  • Peace Park & Playground – supporting our families and visitors

  • The Rainbow Walk – a scenic route through Nimbin’s heart and history

This upgrade means cleaner, safer and more accessible facilities for locals and tourists alike. It’s one more step toward making Nimbin a welcoming destination for all, while also honouring our community’s needs and wellbeing.

Art that reflects our heart

As if this new space couldn’t get any better, we’re excited to announce that local artist Julie De Lorenzo has been selected to complete the mural artwork on the toilet block. Julie’s creative touch is known throughout the village for capturing Nimbin’s unique spirit and we can’t wait to see what magic she brings to this new community canvas.

A round of applause, please!

To everyone who pushed, petitioned, presented and persevered - thank you. From community groups like NAG to the artists who make us smile and the decision-makers who got it done, this project is a real win for Nimbin.

And if you’re out and about - go admire the new loo. It’s not just functional. It’s fabulous!
